Crotone is located on the eastern side of Calabria, overlooking the Ionian Sea near the mouth of the river Esaro. The city is located just 8 m above sea level. The climate is temperate. Winter is generally mild, even if you experience temporary but sudden drop in temperature with occasional snowfall, in case of influx of polar air. Summer is hot but breezy enough from the sea breeze; only in the presence of heat waves with south winds or south-west wind, the maximum temperatures can rise up to 40°C but with low rates of relative humidity. Rainfall occurs mainly in the fall and in the spring and summer can greatly worsen drought.
